Some of the hallmarks of a David Hunt Lighting product are our distinctive surface finishes, signature colour palette and curated choice of fabric and lining options. Here you can view these elements in more detail and learn what makes each so important to our design process.
A perfect synergy between material and process is what really sets David Hunt Lighting finishes apart. We have spent decades evolving each and every stage of our design process, of which finishing forms a hugely significant part.
We can emulate a broad range of metallic finishes such as brass, pewter and copper using our own specialised powder coating techniques. We can also produce polished chrome and antique brass finishes using a combination of plating, dipping and brushing methods. Each of these base metallics can then be further characterised through treatments including hand polishing or engraving, to name a few.
We are also able to recreate textures and surface qualities inspired by nature and often indistinguishable from the real thing through use of our signature resin casting process, which was introduced and developed by one of our founders more than 50 years ago.
Hand painting is utilised on a number of our collections to give a final surface finish that simply could not be created by means other than that of a skilled artist. Paint is usually applied in a delicate and controlled way using a dry brush to achieve a lightly dusted appearance that highlights the contours and characteristics of the surface to which it is applied. Ranges such as our LAUREL and CABANA exemplify how the use of hand painted gold detailing can give a shimmering pearlescent quality to a piece that becomes even more striking once illuminated.
We use a combination of both hand and mechanically assisted polishing on our ranges, which varies depending on the level of precision and finish required. Both are manual techniques that involve a polishing compound and direct contact between the metal surface and the polisher. Whilst hand polishing takes more time than machine polishing, it also provides a more personalized, precise result. Our SLOANE and JOSHUA ranges demonstrate how polishing can be used to add lustre and depth to an existing surface.
We have found that the best way to reproduce the same natural depth of colour found on organic textures such as our ASPEN wood and HUNTER leather ranges is through hand staining. This process involves either dipping or brushing the stain onto an area before then carefully removing again in some areas, as in the case of our ANTLER range. This slightly unpredictable process is perfect for mimicking nature, and no two pieces will ever be the same!
One of our most prized and closely guarded finishes is our resin casting. Its main advantage lies in its versatility; the compound starts life as viscous liquid that can be poured into purpose-built moulds or ‘castings’. During treatment, a process of curing takes place, resulting in a stable end product that can go on to have various other finishes applied to it. Many of our most well-known designs comprise elements of resin, including our ANTLER, BAILEY and SADDLER ranges.
Hand Engraving or fettling is a supplementary finish that we can use in both an additive and destructive way by either adding or reintroducing surface texture, or by degrading surface treatments, such as paint. A small rotary tool with a range of attachments is used to achieve a finish that looks more textured, aged or organic. Some examples of this are best characterised by our PLANET, BOTANY and FLEMISH ranges.
Over the past decade, we have developed our own distinct colour palette, specifically selected to complement our designs. By combining subtle neutral tones with rich and daring accents, we are able to provide a collection that unites both the beautifully simple with the unapologetically bold.
Now featuring 17 exquisite colours, each deeply pigmented, highly durable and with a smooth matt finish, these paints ensure lasting performance on your light fitting for years to come.
Alongside our comprehensive bespoke service, we also offer a paint service to suit all interior styles. Our online product configurator allows you to customise a choice of fittings with any of our beautiful paint finishes.
Our fabric collection hosts a hand–picked range of luxury satins, dupion silks, woven cottons and pure linens, each finished in a wide variety of both rich and subtle natural dyes. We work alongside British-based fabric suppliers who share our passion for craft and source only the finest materials.
Our shading options are manufactured in close partnership with our sister company, The Light Shade Studio. Based in Oxfordshire, their small and talented team of dedicated shade makers meticulously craft lampshades by hand into a multitude of shapes, sizes, and colours.
The range of possibilities available for those who like to be a little different is even more exciting; if you love interiors as much as we do, you’ll be thrilled to discover that they also offer a fully bespoke service.
Our cotton partner Ian Mankin have over 150 years of heritage and a passion for their craft that goes into every metre of fabric they weave, all designed and made at their Lancashire mill. They breathe life into these traditional fabrics with contemporary design and skilful creativity, repre-senting great value and unbeatable quality, with a focus on natural fibres.
A soft and smooth fabric produced using a combination of cotton and polyester fibres, combed to create a luxurious satin finish.
Our dupion silk is offered in six colour ways and has texture in abundance. It can be both rolled, gathered or pleated for totally different effect. 100% dupion silk is a natural handwoven fabric, unmistakable by a richness and variety of colour and texture. The triangular structure of the fibre acts like a prism, refracting light and giving the surface of the fabric a lustrous sheen. As a natural fibre the texture and slub of dupion silk is characterised by variations and irregularities in the shade and weave.
Our two laid-back linen colour ways each offer an elegantly simple solution with a classic natural feel. Made from 100% linen, this fabric carries an elegant and subtle matt sheen. Linen is a natural fabric made from the flax plant. One of nature’s strongest fibres, its threads have variable lengths that contribute directly to its overall strength and longevity.
Offered in four colour ways, our hard shade laminates are what gives our hardback shades their rigidity. We carefully select our laminate to ensure the shades remain rigid whilst allowing the light to give a soft glow through the fabric. Our metallic laminates add a contemporary feel. The warmer gold and bronze will influence the light giving a warmer ambience.
Our taffeta linings are a crisp, smooth woven fabric made from an acetate polyester mix. There are two distinct types of taffeta: yarn-dyed and piece-dyed. Piece-dyed taffeta is often used in linings and is soft to the touch.
